Throat Chakra Healing: How to Unblock for Better Health

The throat chakra, also known as Vishuddha in Sanskrit, is a powerful gateway to communication, self-expression, creativity, and authenticity. In the context of holistic health and spirituality, a chakra is a center of energy in the body. There are seven main chakras, each associated with specific physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of our being. When a chakra is blocked or imbalanced, it can lead to various health issues and challenges with interpersonal relationships. However, by understanding and engaging in transformative chakra healing practices, you can unblock the throat chakra, significantly improving your health and overall well-being and empowering you to take control of your healing journey. 

The throat chakra, located at the base of the throat near the thyroid gland, is more than just a physical entity. It bridges the lower chakras (root, sacral, solar plexus) and the higher chakras (heart, third eye, crown), facilitating the expression of our inner truth and authentic self. It encompasses the thyroid gland, throat, neck, jaw, mouth, ears, and vocal cords, allowing for the harmonious flow of energy between the different chakras, contributing to our overall health and well-being.


The throat chakra is associated with the color blue, particularly sky blue or turquoise. Blue symbolizes clarity, truth, and communication. Vishudda’s associated element is ether, or akasha in Sanskrit, representing the space through which all other elements manifest. It is associated with sound, vibration, and consciousness. This element is connected to communication and the transmission of energy through speech.

Recognizing the symptoms of a blocked throat chakra is the first step toward healing. A blocked throat chakra can manifest in various physical, emotional, and mental symptoms. Here are some common physical sicknesses and emotional challenges that may be associated with a blocked throat chakra:


Throat Infections: A blocked or imbalanced throat chakra may contribute to recurrent sore throats, tonsillitis, or other throat infections. 


Physical Tension: Blockages in the throat chakra can contribute to physical tension in the neck, shoulders, and jaw. This tension may manifest as stiffness, discomfort, or pain in these areas.


Sleep Disruptions: Emotional and mental imbalances associated with a blocked throat chakra can interfere with sleep quality. Individuals may experience insomnia, restless sleep, or frequent waking during the night. 


Unexpressed Emotions: Suppressing emotions and thoughts due to a blocked throat chakra can lead to emotional imbalances, including frustration, resentment, or sadness. These unexpressed emotions may contribute to stress, anxiety, or depression over time. 


Lack of Authenticity: When the throat chakra is blocked, individuals may struggle to express their true thoughts, feelings, and beliefs. This can result in a lack of authenticity in relationships and interactions, leading to misunderstandings and emotional conflicts. 

Healing the throat chakra is not a complex or distant goal. It's within your reach, with various practices designed to restore balance and harmony to this energy center. These methods are not only practical but also accessible and easy to follow, empowering you to take charge of your well-being. Here are some practical methods for throat chakra healing:

Practicing Asana to Target the Throat Chakra: These poses stimulate the throat area, improve circulation, and promote the flow of prana (life force energy) to support chakra balance and overall health. Using yoga props can assist you in going deeper into these postures.

Back-bending yoga poses:

  • Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana) 
  • Fish Pose (Matsyasana) 
  • Camel Pose (Ustrasana) 
  • Locust Pose (Salabhasana) 
  • Bridge Pose (Setu Bandha Sarvangasana) 

Inverted yoga poses: 

  • Shoulderstand Pose (Sarvangasana) 
  • Plough Pose (Halasana) 


Yoga poses with props:

 

  • Supported Fish Pose (Matsyasana):

        Place a yoga block under your upper back to gently open your chest and                  throat. 

  • Supported Bridge Pose (Setu Bandha Sarvangasana):

        Place a yoga block or bolster underneath your sacrum to elevate the hips. 

  • Supported Camel Pose Variation (Ustrasana):

        Place your yoga wheel parallel to the spine, allowing the wheel to support                your back and chest. 

Breathing Techniques: Incorporate pranayama, a Sanskrit term that translates to 'life force extension ', into your daily routine. Pranayama is a set of breathing techniques that can help regulate energy. Some excellent methods for the Vishuddha chakra include Ujjayi pranayama, Bhramari pranayama, and Lion’s breath. 

To practice Ujayi pranayama, breathe deeply through your nose, filling your lungs. As you exhale through your nose, slightly constrict the back of your throat, creating a soft "haaa" sound. The sound should be gentle and soothing, like ocean waves. Practice Ujjayi breath for several rounds, focusing on the rhythmic sound and the sensation of air flowing through your throat.

To practice Brhamari or bee breath, inhale deeply through the nose. As you exhale, gently press your index fingers against your ears to close them partially, creating a humming sound like a bee. Repeat this humming breath several times, feeling the vibrations in your throat and head. The soothing resonance of Bhramari breath helps release stress, anxiety, and blockages in the throat chakra.

To practice Lion’s breath or Simhasana, deeply inhale through your nose while lifting your hands into the air. Extend your tongue, open your eyes wide, and create an audible sound in your throat as you exhale and claw the air downward with your hands.

Using sound: Any vocal practices like singing, chanting, or even listening to vibrational music are lovely for the throat chakra. Chanting can help you open up your throat chakra. You can use the Om mantra "AUM" or any other soothing sound that resonates with you. Repeat these sounds several times, feeling the vibrations in your throat. This practice can help release tension and improve energy flow in your throat area. 

Explore healing therapies like Tibetan singing, crystal bowls, or sound baths. These vibrations can resonate with your throat chakra, helping to clear blockages and restore harmony to the energy flow in your body.

Affirmations: Affirmations are a powerful tool for working with the throat chakra because they can help reprogram negative thought patterns, enhance self-expression, and promote the energetic balance of this energy center. Here are some examples of positive affirmations to ignite the throat chakra. 

“I can communicate clearly.”

“I speak my truth freely, openly, honestly.”

“I am accountable for expressing myself clearly and truthfully.”

“My honesty attracts honesty.”

“By voicing my desires, I can receive.”

Chakra Meditation: Regular meditation helps reduce stress, positively impacting overall health. To help balance your throat chakra, practice specific throat chakra mediation. Find yourself in a comfortable position by sitting on a yoga block or bolster. You can also lay down on your mat.  Begin by visualizing a bright blue light at your throat, focusing on this area and breathing deeply. Imagine the light expanding with each breath, cleansing and balancing your chakra. 

Healing Stones: Use crystals and gemstones associated with the throat chakra, such as blue lace agate, aquamarine, or lapis lazuli. Hold the stone over your throat during meditation, or carry it to support chakra healing and enhance your health.

Journaling: Keep a journal to explore and express your thoughts, emotions, and experiences related to communication and self-expression. Writing can help you process and release any blockages or challenges associated with the throat chakra.

Consistency and mindfulness are essential when working with your throat chakra to improve your health. By integrating these practices into your daily life, you can support its balance and vitality. Be aware of your throat chakra on the yoga mat, for in your yoga practice, you will notice a change in your energy. The goal is to have your chakras open and flowing harmoniously, allowing for the free flow of energy throughout your body. This balance is crucial for your overall well-being. Listen to your body’s needs as you nurture and balance this chakra. Enjoy the benefits of healing the throat chakra. Allow your truth to shine through, be authentic, and let your creativity flow.
